We call them Baby Jails: Asylum Nightmares in a US Immigrant Detention Center

February 7, 2018

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Location

Lecture Center B2

Virginia Martinez, attorney and community activist with the CARA Pro Bono Project, will make lead a discussion about the current policies, legal actions and grassroots efforts to address the pressing issue of family detention.
The federal government has opened the largest immigrant family detention center in Dilley, Texas with a capacity of over 2000 women and children seeking asylum, most of whom are from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. Every day mothers and children fleeing poverty and violence are criminalized and detained. They are strategically held in remote locations, making it difficult for them to find attorneys to help them apply for legal protection.
