LALS/LAS Dissertation Fellowship

 

2026-27
The Department of Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at UIC seeks one dissertation fellow for the 2026-27 academic year. This is a oneyear appointment with a start date of August 16, 2026 and end date of May 15, 2027. Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program at UIC, and their primary research focus must be in U.S. Latina/o/x/e Studies. The fellowship includes a $25,000 stipend plus tuition waiver and health benefits. The goal of the dissertation fellowship program is to facilitate the completion of the dissertation and thus contribute to increasing the number of scholars working in Latina/o/x/e Studies in the academy. The fellowship is generously funded by the College of Liberal Arts andSciences.

Eligibility and Requirements

• ABD status with significant writing progress made toward the dissertation and with the intention to complete their dissertation by the end of the fellowship year or shortly
thereafter.
• Research and professional goals are in the field of Latina/o/x/e Studies (humanities or humanistic social sciences).
• Applicants should be planning to pursue an academic career in teaching and/or research.
• During the fellowship year, students must be enrolled full-time at UIC. Fellows must forego other employment during the year and plan to focus on completing and defending
their dissertation.
• Selected fellow is required to participate in the intellectual life of LALS by attending lectures and other events. The Fellow must also present their work in progress at a LALS
Workshop. All of our events are in person. The fellow must be in residence at UIC. Failure to participate in all these aspects of the fellowship may result in the loss of funding.

Required Application Materials

• CV
• Cover letter that includes: 1) a description of your dissertation and its contributions to Latino/a/x/e Studies, 2) your progress to completion with a detailed description of what you have finished already and your plan for finishing during the fellowship year, 3) how the fellowship will help you achieve your goals.
• An annotated outline of the dissertation with chapter titles, brief chapter summaries, and percentages of each chapter completed.
• All completed and advanced in-progress chapters compiled into a single PDF. If you do not have any chapters completed, just submit the annotated outline noted above.
• A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s dissertation chair due by February 16, 2026.
