About
Martín is a first-generation Chicanx and aspiring educator. Born to immigrant parents from Guanajuato, Mexico, he was raised in the western suburb of Stickney, Illinois. Martín graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Teaching of History from the University of Illinois-Chicago. As an undergraduate, he was awarded both the Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Award (CURA) and Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Initiative (LASURI). As a research assistant for UIC Assistant Professor, Dr. Ivón Padilla-Rodríguez, he aided in the cataloging of transcripts of early-twentieth-century U.S. Bureau of Immigration cases concerning the admission of Mexican refugee children for Dr. Padilla-Rodríguez’s current book project. As a student researcher, Martín explored the Mexican-Americanization projects undertaken by a Mexican-American veterans organization during the expansion of the Mexican community in Cicero, Illinois, during the late twentieth century. As a graduate student, he intends to explore contemporary and historical issues/topics pertaining to the education of Latino/a/x students in the Chicagoland area. Martín is also a substitute teacher for Chicago Public Schools and, in his free time, enjoys reading, playing soccer, and exploring new restaurants in the area.
