Download iCal FileDuring the early 1970s, youth of Latin American origin organized for educational rights throughout the country. Cubans in Dade County fought for bilingual studies, Puerto Ricans in New York mobilized for the creation of Puerto Rican Studies, and Mexican Americans in the Southwest created Chicano Studies. In Chicago, Puerto Rican and Mexican communities came together to build what is now the Department of Latin American and Latinos Studies at UIC. Founded in 1974, the Department is a space of learning and research that focuses on Latin America and communities of Latin American origin in the city and nation.
Come join us as we kick-off our 50th Anniversary Celebrations with an event that focuses on the founding of Latin American and Latino Studies out of student moments and the subsequent development of the Department. Our speakers will include activists involved in founding the Department, as well as former directors who help build up the unit.
