Update -

Dear Colleagues and Students,

We hope this message finds you well.

We write to you on behalf of the LALS Program Committee to inform you, with sincere regret, that Professor María Cristina García's keynote address at the Institute for the Humanities, originally scheduled for tomorrow, April 1, 2025, must be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Unfortunately, Professor García is currently unwell and, under medical advice, cannot travel or participate in any engagements. While we greatly looked forward to her contribution, her health and well-being must be prioritized.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. We are currently exploring alternatives and will be sure to share updates as soon as possible regarding a possible rescheduling.

Thank you for your patience and continued support.

Warm regards,

LALS

Environmental disasters are policy disasters. They make evident inequality, violence, indebtedness, corruption, and the legacies of war and colonialism. They produce internal displacement and cross-border migration, and yet there are few tracks for admission for “climate refugees” in immigration regimes. Garcia will discuss the environmental drivers of Central American migration since 1998that are often obscured in immigration records, and the limited protections available to those displaced by disasters and accelerating climate change.
