LALS Hosts Bordando Esperanza Event
On September 19, 2024 the Department of Latin American and Latino Studies continued its 50th Anniversary celebrations by hosting the Bordando Esperanza event at 18th Street Casa de Cultura.
This exhibition features hand-stitched retablos made by migrants at the US-Mexico border. Join us for the opening reception and a conversation between visiting bordadoras and Emmanuel Ortega, Assistant Professor in Art of the Spanish Americas at the University of Illinois Chicago. They will discuss the practice and politics of bordados devocionales. The exhibition runs through October 21, 2024.
Bordando Esperanza is coordinated and supported by Artisans Beyond Borders and La Casa de las Misericordia y Todas Naciones in Nogales,Mexico. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Anthropology, Gender and Women’s Studies, the Latino Cultural Center, and the Department of Sociology. The exhibition has been generously funded by a Mellon Foundation Affirming Multivocal Humanities Grant.
