About
Carlos is a second-generation Chicane, born and raised in Chicago’s Southwest Side. While his family has found a home in Gage Park, his roots are in Michoacán and Durango, México. Carlos left to SoCal where he earned his bachelor's degree at Pomona College as a first-generation student, with a major in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and a minor in Chicano/Latino Studies. Now, he is back in the city as a first year PhD student in the Policy Studies in Urban Education: Social Foundations program. While here, he hopes to focus his research on documenting and studying the experiences of the growing Latine student populations in Chicago’s private schools. The goal of his research is not only to center and empower the voices of marginalized students, but also to investigate how Latine communal and spiritual practices in Chicago contribute to the creation of liberatory pedagogies and praxis. Carlos' areas of interest are in liberation theology, transnationalism, social philosophy, crimmigration, and Latine social movements. In his free time, Carlos is with his friends playing soccer or video games. He also enjoys exploring the city and finding new places to eat at.
